The astronomical costs of poor reliability in both military and civil aircraft have led to increased efforts by designers and operators to improve reliability. One of the most powerful ways of doing this is to examine the good and bad points of current aircrafts' performance to see where improvements may be made. This process is heavily dependent on the quality of reliability information available to the industry.

Aircraft design specifications include stringent quantitative maintainability targets which must be achieved during the design stage of a new aircraft programme. The manufacturer is required to provide servicing guarantees and elapsed time guarantees for the removal/replacement of all mission‐critical, line‐replaceable units. This demonstrates the need for an aircraft‐orientated maintainability prediction methodology, for use in the design process. A suitable methodology is here presented. Initial work checked the servicing requirements and showed initial adequate performance. An elapsed time removal/replacement methodology was evolved which was then computerised to facilitate repeated application during the design process.

Our paper discusses the need for continued focus on ethical leadership and the importance and benefits of ethical leadership development. We propose integrating ethical leadership development, that uses cognitive development theory, into the Center for Creative Leadership’s Assess, Challenge, and Support (ACS) leader development model to help address the continued failures of ethical leader development. Our extended framework includes values and morals as a component of the model, and ethical organizational culture as its backdrop, thereby incorporating an examination of ethical leadership into each component of the ACS model. We conclude with practical implications and suggestions for future research.

This study examines the relationship between emotional labour and burnout and the moderating effect of emotional intelligence on this relationship. The survey was conducted at several tourism and hospitality organizations in Florida, USA. The results show that both acting strategies of emotional labour relate positively to burnout. Tests of moderation show that emotional intelligence reduces employee burnout. These findings contribute to the literature on emotional labour by incorporating emotional intelligence as a moderator, and provide some guidance for human resource practitioners about potentially beneficial training and recruitment activities. They also have implications for customer relationship management.

The purpose of this study was to gather data from orphaned learners on their lived experiences in order to gain more understanding of their educational needs. Twelve orphaned learners (aged 14‐17) from two schools in Mpumalanga Province in South Africa participated in the study. The draw‐write and narrative approach was used to elicit information from the children. The methodological, ethical and practical issues emerging from researching orphans using this approach are discussed and illustrated using examples from the study. The article demonstrates that integrating visual, written and interview data collection methods may enable vulnerable children to open up and talk about their experiences. However, it requires the researcher to be patient, sensitive and empathetic to the circumstances of such children.

The airlines cancel their flights frequently because of factors that they do not have any control over. Spare aircraft can potentially address some of the issues caused by cancelled flights. This paper aims to offer an exploratory study into the financial and operational viabilities of spare aircraft for airlines.

Mathematical models are proposed to evaluate the financial and operational metrics under different scenarios. The models are applied to Delta, Spirit and Southwest Airlines with different business models. All data are extracted from US Bureau of Transport Statistics, Cirium Diio Mi and CAPA databases. The IBM Cplex solver was used to execute the binary linear program models.

The research revealed that factors such as airline network size, hub and spoke structure and average weekly flight cancellations are crucial in establishing the need for spare aircraft. For the number of weekly cancellations, there exist break-even values that reasonably justify spare aircraft.

Models can be customized and applied to other modes of transportations.

This study is the first to consider the use of spare aircraft in airlines from both financial and operational perspectives within the scope of the mathematical model. The analyses identify financial break-even points for a number of spare aircraft and their home base locations for three airlines. Operational utilization of spare aircraft is studied and contrasted with financial metrics.

For many years it has been the College of Aeronautics' philosophy that the best way to teach aircraft design is to actually do it. To this end the Aircraft Design MSc students perform an annual group design project based on types of aircraft that are of current interest.
